Treatments

Surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and alternative medicine

Facing the prospects of treatment often seems difficult, especially due to the aggressive nature of mesothelioma or asbestos-related lung cancer. However, through ongoing research, new treatment options become available all the time. Many oncologists specialize in mesothelioma or asbestos-related lung cancer, and tailor treatment to individual patient needs.

Early diagnosis and treatment can lengthen survival and improve quality of life. If you have worked with or been exposed to asbestos and have symptoms, it is important to get diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.

Conventional Treatments

For mesothelioma and asbestos-related lung cancer, oncologists use the following conventional treatments, either singly or in combination:

  • Surgery

In early stages of mesothelioma, surgery may be performed in an attempt to cure. Surgery is also done to relieve pain and improve the quality of life. Such surgeries may include removing fluid from the lungs or injecting talc to prevent fluid return. In certain serious cases, an oncologist may remove the lining of the lung to ease pain and breathing difficulty.
  • Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells. While chemo also kills healthy cells, it helps patients experience relief from extreme cancer pain and other discomforts. Oncologists prefer certain drugs or combinations of drugs in the treatment of mesothelioma or asbestos-related lung cancer. Doctors often prescribe medication or vitamins to counteract chemo side effects.
  • Radiation

Radiation therapy can be delivered internally using radioactive substances or externally through beam radiation, such as x-rays or gamma rays. Generally, radiation therapy has more tolerable side effects and is used to relieve discomfort for patients too delicate for surgery or chemotherapy.

Other Treatment Options

Other treatment options may include clinical trials, and alternative therapies such as vitamins, herbs, minerals, amino acids, peptides, acupuncture, or massage.

Every day, cancer specialists work toward finding cures for malignant mesothelioma. There are instances where mesothelioma victims have developed successful treatment programs that worked in their particular case, such as Paul Krauss, who was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 1997 and is still alive today.
